Agreed with Thomas, if this a TCCL issue then the best fix is to use the two-arg form of the method and pass in "CurrentClass.class.getClassLoader()".
I suspect now that the problem is when TCCL is null which is in fact the only possible "wrong" CL to give, since that's the one we cannot add redirection to. If this is the case then this is a bug though, as we should be able to handle this situation.
