The other problem with a custom settings.xml is that it may also be needed by any projects that are used in AS7 but then to manage releases of these projects configuration is needed to authenticate against nexus so before you know it there is a risk of authentication configuration creeping in.

The alternative is that the repo can be set in the pom but I also know there is plenty of objection to that approach as well.
