Stan,

I added some screen shots of the preferences window in Eclipse.  You can see that there are many trees(General, Ant, Data Management, etc.).  If you type in the filter box, only trees which have that term are shown.  Here, it also searches the text in each preference window, but I'm thinking as long as it shows branches which match the text, we'd be good.

Example:

In the root view, it shows all the extensions, org.jboss.as.modcluster, org.jboss.as.jmx, etc.  If I were to type "jmx", org.jboss.as.modcluster would not be displayed, and org.jboss.as.jmx would be.
