VFS URLs have been used more than FILE URLs.  Internally, we convert from VFS to FILE URLs (if VFS is set to false).  I'm not aware of any issues with the conversion logic.

Also, I hope to see [AS7-5764|https://issues.jboss.org/browse/AS7-5764] merged into the AS7 master codebase soon, so that users can globally set VFS to false (jboss.as.jpa.vfs in persistence.xml will override the global setting).
