I downloaded and built the latest version (jboss-as-7.2.0.Alpha1-SNAPSHOT) from github.com/jbossas/jboss-as.git. The cryptic message on the console changed a little, but the problem is still there. 

Bottom line for this issue: 
* if running the standalone.xml configuration without the integrated HornetQ, one can't deploy MDBs that consume from a queue on a remote HornetQ server. 
* using standalone-full.xml and configuring a trimmed down integrated HornetQ server and a pooled connection factory doesn't work either. AS 7 will automatically rewrite standalone-full.xml and remove your pooled connection factory as described on this other thread: https://community.jboss.org/thread/203086.
