Hi Thomas,
I was a bit surprised to see this bug assigned to me - I'm not a MaC OS expert :) but anyhow, I'll help if I can. I must admit I'm a bit confused by what you are trying to achieve here. The script provided in bin/init.d/ folder, as indicated by their name, are designed to run Wildfly, as a service, on a operating system using the init. Again, not a MacOS expert, but I don't think Mac (or exactly Darwin) is using such service.
I agree with you when you "the script should fail early when not run by root", but technically, they should just be linked or copy into the init.d folder and therefore always be run by root. Bottom line here, I'm not sure I know what you want me to fix/do here ?
