There is something you can do, namely, increase the default heap size in build.sh ie change

bq.    MAVEN_OPTS="$MAVEN_OPTS -Xmx768M"

to something bigger such as -Xmx1024M"

But the tip you gave is helpful (thank you for that) but I would much rather you fix build.sh instead.
