Thinking on this further the simplest options seems to be a new authentication mechanism, possibly even in the JBoss Negotiation project that can still work with the existing login modules and security domain configurations - this way configuration on the server is unchanged and users do not need to migrate to the security realms that are also deprecated.

Subsequently once integrated all users can switch to the WildFly Elytron approach.
