The maven-injection-plugin works fine, I use it and I have no reservations. Are you using the <className> tag in the section:

<bytecodeInjection>
	<expression>${mavenVersion}</expression>
	<targetMembers>
		<methodBodyReturn>
			<className>com.project.MyClassVersion</className>
			<methodName>getVersionMaven</methodName>
		</methodBodyReturn>

I suspect this error is due to an invalid path in className and because of missing correct class name or path
