Here at our company, we make extensible use of this feature. Since our product is SaaS, we have developed a Plug and Play multi-tenancy JPA persistence technique that only works given the flexibility of the -ds.xml deployment feature.

This is really an advantage of JBoss / Wildfly application server over others.

+1 for not removing it.

We use this in both development standalone and complex production domain mode.
