In javassist.util.proxy.DefineClassHelper.SecuredPrivileged#defineClass: 165
there is that code:

                } catch (Throwable e) {
                    if (e instanceof RuntimeException) throw (RuntimeException) e;
                    if (e instanceof ClassFormatError) throw (ClassFormatError) e;
                    throw new ClassFormatError(e.getMessage());
````
I think the instantiated ClassFormatError should take "e" as argument.

Shortly after:
In javassist.util.proxy.DefineClassHelper#toClass throws a NPE because line 249 expectes the cause to be not null
