[~gabriolo] I might not be understanding the question, but : If the question is should the tree reflect the selection, then yes definitely. I had assumed this was something that came along with the tree widget component. I would think it remains highlighted as long as it's the current selection, until the user selects something else. So if they edit the column, the expression panel would open in the state of the last save. Is this what you're referring to:
