So as far as I see you want to some button on the "selection rectangle", like the "toolbox" does. Yeah it should be possible, np, the actual toolbox just can be wrapped around any shape, by using it's bounding box, so should be not hard to add buttons around that selection rectangle. 

As you know actually adding the buttons on the selection shape is not yet configurable, so we need to do some small refactoring for it, but as commented, it should be not hard, all the features are there. So I would go ahead with this approach, even having to code a little bit for making a toolbox appear on the selection shape, I think it worths.
