I was referring stylesheet and script in the jboss-portlet.xml.
Just the refernece to stylesheet works for me.
when I refer to script it creates script <script src="xyz.js"/ >instead of 
<  script src = "xyz.js"   >
 < /script >  in the header. That is causing problem in IE.
