I am running JBoss 4.0.4GA on Fedora Core 5 using the 1.4.2_12 JVM, and it is working fine.

Does the same thing happen if you use a different JVM version (1.4.2_10, or 1.5.0_x)?  I am wondering if your JVM installation is corrupt.  Or one of the FC5 shared objects.
