Ok, the no conversation conext error is the same as described.  So as long as I don't bind anything to a conversation scoped object it's fine.  Although I didn't see that in the FAQ section.

However I'm still boggled about why my GET requests work and still contain data from the conversation even when I don't specify a "conversationId" param in the link.
