I would suggest you abondon the idea of supporting old style jaxrpc service-refs - jaxws is the future that is being adopted quickly.

Instead, work on jaxws client injection with @WebServiceRef and possible overwrites of the @WebServiceRef attributes via <service-ref> in web.xml

Have a look at our @WebServiceRef tests.
