Downloading from trunk gets you the latest 5.0 beta software. The build-ability of that has fluctuated greatly in the past several months. If I were you, I would either download a binary package from the download page, or get one of the tags. For example, to get the 4.2.1 source, use:

svn co http://anonsvn.jboss.org/repos/jbossas/tags/JBoss_4_2_1_GA/ jbossas
