I forgot to list my environment:
JBoss 4.0.5.GA (with EJB3.0 RC9 Patch 1)
JDK 1.5_06
Jackrabbit 1.3.1

I also read about the following limitation for EJB3 embedded (http://docs.jboss.org/ejb3/embedded/embedded.html):
