After exchanging some emails with Jacek and fine-tuning the test to accuratelly recreate the problem, I've found and fixed this.  The fix is in 1.4.1.GA and 2.0.0.ALPHA2, details of the solution are documented on JBCACHE-923.

Updated unit tests are in CVS.
