Note that this is inside a Websphere container... and is using a Websphere-provided connection.  Could the problem be with Websphere somehow?  This would be an obvious concern with EJBs, but I don't know whether it's likely in a web app.

If this seems at all likely, you may want to try running with Oracle, but outside of the container.

It may not be fair to ask Alex for help in this Websphere area - given the competitive relationship between his employer and IBM/Websphere.
