You can use JSF 1.2 as long as you use Facelets instead of JSP.  JSF 1.2 requires JSP 2.1.  Upgrading JSP is much harder to do.  For that you really need to look at JBoss AS 4.2.

The steps outlined by Gavin are basically what you need to do.  Make sure you read the whole thread carefully.  If I remember, there were one or two inaccuracies in the original post.
