I found that by undoing the change I made in accordance with Chapter 8 i.e. removing this line
<property name="com.arjuna.ats.jta.recovery.XAResourceRecovery.JBMESSAGING1"....

the error messages disappear.  Now I have new errors but that's another story. :)
