OK I fixed this by editing a couple of feature.xml files.

also removed the org.eclipse.jem import element from D:\Development\Seam2\eclipse\features\org.jboss.ide.eclipse.feature_2.0.0.200706241629-nightly
Don't know if my environment will now disappear in a puff of smoke when I do any serious work. But at least I can checkout my code from subversion now :)
