Switching from SMPC to @PersistenceContext(type=EXTENDED) solves the problem , without any other changes in code. 

If I were not sure that conversation is always the same long-running one, the obvious suspection could be getting out of scope. But conversation is ok. 
Absolutely no idea what might cause this effect...
