Just a blind shot in the air. But a good thing would be to reduce number of variables you have. Can you try removing portal/portlet from the mix? Meaning, write a simple app that only uses Richfaces and webservice stuff. If it does not work, then it becomes more of a question of richfaces or webservices and you have to ask in the appropriate forum.
