im sorry, i forgot to describe the environment. 
i have got jboss-portal-2.6.3.GA binary bundle installed, in windows xp sp2 (but i thing the problem above exposed appears in unix too) and the custom database is postgresql 8.1 (postgresql-8.1-411.jdbc3 jdbc driver)
