I've committed some changes to the Remoting 2.4.0 branch (http://anonsvn.jboss.org/repos/jbossremoting/remoting2/branches/2.x/) which implement a caching mechanism for unmarshallers.  The code is somewhat more complex than simply recreating the unmarshaller with each invocation, but it seems to be faster by a factor of approximately 2.14.
