I'm sorry I don't have your answer, but have the same or a very similar problem with my JSF portal application. I too am searching for an answer to this. 

My app runs fine under AS 4.0.5 and portal server 2.6

but gives JSF errors and will load the portlets under 4.2.2 and 2.6.3
