I think you did more work than what you had to. You should leave the hsqldb as is - there are other services in the app server that rely on it. Read the documentation, it tells you how to set up a different database: http://docs.jboss.com/jbportal/v2.6.4/referenceGuide/html/installation.html#d0e696
