When you run the run script (run.bat or run.sh), wait until you the "Started in" message in the console log. It looks like this:

2007-09-16 16:24:51,546 INFO  [org.jboss.system.server.Server] JBoss (MX MicroKernel) [4.0.5.GA (build: CVSTag=Branch_4_0 date=200610162339)] Started in 37s:578ms
