oops.  Sorry.  Looks like I messed up on this one.

The 1.5 32-bit jdk I have been using on my ubuntu 64bit system has been running fine up until a recent upgrade of ubuntu.  Now, with a 64-bit 1.5 jdk, seam runs without error.
