AS 4.2.1 ships with Remoting 2.2.1.GA and AS 4.2.3 ships with Remoting 2.2.2.SP8.  I did a quick scan of the issues resolved after 2.2.1.GA and nothing jumps out at me as relevant to your exception.

Have you done either of these experiments:

1. run AS 4.2.1 with Remoting 2.2.2.SP8

2. run AS 4.2.3 with Remoting 2.2.1.GA?
