If you aren't developing applications for JBoss, I would say the required core Java knowledge is minimal. Most of the important administrative functionality is configured through XML and other non-Java methods. The JBoss documentation will make more sense to you with some J2EE knowledge and so some basic Java experience is necessary for that.

If you're interested in taking the Advanced JBoss class as some point (not the ones posted by PeterJ), you'll need to have a solid Java background, but this doesn't sound like your current interest.
