Have a look at cache-jbosscache2 module's org.hibernate.test.cache.jbc2.functional.util.DualNodeTransactionManagerImpl; it uses a ThreadLocal instead of a single reference.

Also, FYI org.hibernate.test.cache.jbc2.functional package has some (not very well documented) infrastructure for running multiple node tests (although what you are doing is single node.
