No, you won't require WTP for using JBoss AS. All you need is the JBoss AS .zip distribution. Extract that .zip to some location, set  JAVA_HOME  to point to a JDK installation and then use the run.sh or run.bat (depending on the operating system you use) from the bin folder of JBoss AS.
