Self reply: I found this https://jira.jboss.org/jira/browse/EJBTHREE-1701 after more forum searching. as work-around we are now moving the initiation of starting the timers to servlets as suggested in this very on post http://onjava.com/pub/a/onjava/2004/10/13/j2ee-timers.html?page=last
