You should be acccessing a database connection via the connection pool manager. Do this instead:

InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
DataSource ds = (DataSource)ctx.lookup("java:MySQLDB");  // Name used in *-ds.xml file
Connection conn = ds.getConnection();
