Thank you Jaikiran.  That did the trick.  The workaround works.  I infer that this problem applies to ALL deployment descriptors, i.e. web.xml, jboss.xml, ejb-jar-xml, etc and that the solution (or workaround in this case) applies to all of them.  Thanks again.
