Most likely reason is that your workitems are not correct and thre should be exceptions in your logs indicating that (look for some MVEL exceptions and show them if exist).

jBPM Designer 2.0 which should be out very soon handles this better and does not "blow up" if your workitem defintions mvel cannot be parsed..just prints info message in the logs so you are aware.
