You could follow similar pattern to what  https://github.com/droolsjbpm/jbpm/blob/master/jbpm-bpmn2/src/main/java/org/jbpm/bpmn2/handler/ReceiveTaskHandler.java ReceiveTaskHandler does, meaning you add reference to the session in work item handler and then use it to, for instance insert a fact or set process variable.
