That can be explained if you installed m2e > 0.12 before hand. Hard to say without seeing the actual error.
Can't you install m2e-wtp 0.13.1 instead ( http://community.jboss.org/en/tools/blog/2011/08/01/m2eclipse-wtp-0131-back-to-the-m2e-marketplace http://community.jboss.org/en/tools/blog/2011/08/01/m2eclipse-wtp-0131-back-to-the-m2e-marketplace)?
