I believe it can be linked to the already resolved  https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBPM-3032 issue with sending emails that requires authentication. Recommended way would be to upgrade to jBPM 5.2 but if that is not the case for you, another try could be done just to upgrade jbpm-workitems library.
