I have the same question. I just went through the material for jBPM and we are currently at an evaluation stage of selecting a BPMS tool. This looks very promising and our development team is already working with the open source platform. 
As I understand it is possible to integrate external systems (a php solution in our case) executable workflows to php through Web services.
