The problem is related to this bug in Hibernate Validator described here:  https://hibernate.onjira.com/browse/HV-551 https://hibernate.onjira.com/browse/HV-551

It essentially makes using Hibernate Validator 4.2.0.Final a non-starter with JBoss 4.1.1, but the easy fix is to upgrade JBoss's org.hibernate.validator module to use 4.3.0.Final.
