Thanks for responding Thomas.  I think it must be a bug, because I was able to save without validating for awhile, but then after adding more nodes it just got to a point where it wouldn't save anymore and eventually locked up.   This is undesirable behavior though;  imagine writing Java code and not being able to save files that have compile errors?
