Siarhei - the maven plugin is useless in my point of view; I would need to put big yellow warning signs on every setting/nature installation in eclipse to tell users that "everything you edit here will probably be forgotten".  

m2eclipse is doing the parts about providing a classpath container correctly; but http://code.google.com/p/q4e/ looks like they are doing it much more "eclipse plugin" friendly...but I ned to digg deeper to see if that holdsup.

A good maven plugin should not try and fight with both maven and specific eclipse plugins to solve the issue - the maven plugin should read the pom's and provide enough information (like classpath containers) and control the profile support so the actual files will be in proper locations for the tooling to utilize.
