Are you sure? If you can select anything it doesn't mean that after that combobox doesn't lost selection. After selection VPE does some work with source node and reinitialize format tool bar again. I'm prety sure it is not a visual problem like the issue with combobox with fonts.
So there are definitely at least two different issues.
