This functionality works in 3.4.1. Try downloading and installing Tasktop Pro for Eclipse -- it will prompt you to validate your install, and after a while, will downgrade you automatically from Pro to Starter unless you pay the $99 for the license.

Essentially, you get two update sites added to Eclipse -- one with your credentials, and one with the updates. 

I can talk to Mik and the guys from Tasktop to learn how they've implemented this authentication mechanism, if this is the type of workflow you're looking for.
