Building JSF portlets in a common scenario and something we support though the JBoss Portlet Bridge.

At the moment you would need to get the latest Portlet Bridge sources as the latest released version (Beta 3) has an issue when it comes to plain JSF without Facelets.

An exemple of plain JSF portlet is available here: 
https://svn.jboss.org/repos/portletbridge/trunk/examples/jsf-ri/1.2-basic/
But you will need to install in your maven repo the Portlet Bridge API and Impl:
